I’ve been thinking about something lately that honestly stopped me in my tracks.
When my kids look at me…
What do they actually see?
Not what I intend.
Not what I hope.
What do they really experience?
Do they see someone who’s present?
Someone who listens?
Someone who slows down long enough to notice them?
Or do they mostly see someone distracted?
Tired.
Busy.
Always moving toward the next thing.
That question hit me harder than I expected.
Because as parents, we usually judge ourselves by our intentions.
“I’m doing this for them.”
“I’m working hard for them.”
“I’m trying.”
And those things are true.
But kids don’t experience our intentions.
They experience our presence.
They experience our attention.
Our tone.
Our reactions.
The moments where we stop and actually enter their world.
That’s what stays with them.
And honestly… realizing that has changed me.
Not overnight.
But enough to make me pause more often.
Enough to put the phone down sometimes.
Enough to say yes when I normally would’ve said “later.”
Enough to understand that the version of me my kids remember…
Is being built right now.
In small moments.
Every single day.
